We think CARE Australia is genuinely different. Here’s why:
1 CARE focuses on women because they are the enablers who raise communities out of poverty: when you help one woman, she’ll bring four others with her.
2 CARE acknowledges that no-one knows a place and its people like a local does - local responders are the best responders when it comes to breaking the cycle of poverty and responding to disasters.
3 CARE works with some of our closest neighbours. South-East Asia and the Pacific are two of the most disaster-prone areas in the world. That’s why CARE Australia focuses its expertise in our region first, where they can make the greatest impact.

Shelly's Story
Tropical Cyclone Harold - a category five - hit Pentecost Island in Vanuatu with incredible force. It completely destroyed Shelley’s home but CARE’s local partners were ready to help rebuild.
“Pentecost has never had a cyclone like this,” Shelley said. Her entire community emerged from the destruction to find their homes in disarray, and their belongings carried off by the wind. CARE’s team in Vanuatu was able to rapidly respond, ensuring families had the tools and equipment they needed to rebuild, and to feed their families.
CARE provided Shelley’s family with the construction equipment needed to start rebuilding their house. But they were most pleased about receiving cooking equipment, as theirs had all been lost in the storm.
“We were so happy,” said Shelley about the items she received from CARE. “It was all the things that we needed, and CARE Australia gave us all of them … the saucepans, plates, dishes and buckets.” Now, when her son Locklin eats his dinner, Shelley says he always asks to use the “disaster” spoons and plates which CARE provided!
